CHIANG MAI (NNT) – The 9th session of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) foreign ministers’ meeting, led by Thailand and China in Chiang Mai province, has addressed key issues pertaining to human security across the Mekong subregion. The gathering saw participation from member countries China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, where they pledged to enhance regional security to foster inclusive growth.
During yesterday’s (Aug 16) discussions, participants focused on strengthening cooperation against transboundary crimes such as drug trafficking and cybercrime, agreeing on data sharing, border control enhancements, and capacity-building strategies. Environmental issues were also on the agenda, with resolutions to launch a Clean Air initiative to mitigate transboundary air pollution and promote a haze-free Mekong-Lancang community. The session also highlighted the importance of water resource management, particularly of the Mekong River, known as Lancang in China, which is crucial for the region’s sustainability.
Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Eksiri Pintaruchi, affirmed the country’s commitment to these initiatives. She stressed the importance of cooperation in biodiversity enhancement and water resource management through the establishment of the Mekong-Lancang Water Resources Cooperation Center and the Mekong River Mission Secretariat. These efforts affirm a regional commitment to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all nations along the Mekong.
