The New Senate will Convene for its Inaugural Session Next Week

BANGKOK (NNT) – The newly elected Senate has been scheduled to convene for its inaugural session next Tuesday (July 23), during which they will elect a Senate speaker and two deputies. Senate Secretary-General Napaporn Jaisajja confirmed that the session will be presided over by the most senior member, Pol Lt Gen Yutthana Thaiphakdee, where 200 senators will take a vow to serve with integrity. The chosen speaker and deputies’ names will then be submitted for endorsement by His Majesty the King, with the Senate’s first official working meeting expected to commence seven days following this royal endorsement.
In the event that Pol Lt Gen Yutthana is unable to fulfil these initial duties, he will be substituted by senators Lae Dilokvidhyarat and Boonsong Noisopon. Prior to formal voting, senators are encouraged to meet informally to familiarize themselves with each other’s views and platforms.
Senator Nantana Nantavaropas from the mass communications sector has expressed her group’s interest in vying for these leadership positions. The group is advocating for inclusive representation, including the potential for a woman to occupy the roles of speaker or deputy speaker, as well as pushing for legislative reforms concerning Senate elections.
Senator Yukol Chanawatpanya, who represents the elderly, disabled, and ethnic groups, emphasized the importance of electing a Senate speaker who is knowledgeable and impartial in serving the country and its people. He stressed that senators should not be partisan or factional, but rather utilize their expertise to work for the greater good.
