Thailand is ready to host leaders of 6 countries to attend BIMSTEC leaders’ meeting in Bangkok

The Prime Minister confirmed that Thailand is ready to host the leaders of 6 countries to attend the Bay of Bengal BIMSTEC leaders’ meeting in Bangkok and invited Thai people to join in hosting on 3-4 April.

Today (March 30, 2025) at 9:30 a.m., Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, Government Spokesperson, revealed that Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, has prepared to welcome leaders and representatives from 6 member countries of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation),  namely: 1. Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of the Advisory Board to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh 2. Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan 3. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India 4. Mr. K. P. Sarma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal 5. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and 6. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Initially, from the news reports via foreign news agencies, the Myanmar government spokesman held a press conference last Friday, stating that the Prime Minister of Myanmar will travel to join the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, which will be held on 3-4 April 2025 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok.  

The Prime Minister expressed his confidence that Thailand and Bangkok are ready to host this meeting. He therefore invited all Thai people from all sectors to join in hosting and welcoming the participants. 
     
The 6th BIMSTEC Summit hosted by Thailand is the first international meeting of the current government. It will be an important opportunity for Thailand to showcase its potential as a host to drive regional cooperation with member countries to strengthen stable and sustainable economic development, as well as strengthen trade, investment, and cooperation in various fields. The meeting will endorse several important outcome documents, such as the Declaration of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, which expresses the members’ intention to drive cooperation for economic growth, regional connectivity, and security. 

In addition, the meeting will endorse the Bangkok Vision 2030, which focuses on prosperity, sustainability, and openness of BIMSTEC, with the goal of promoting trade, investment, and transportation cooperation, as well as endorsing regulations for the operating mechanism under the BIMSTEC framework to enhance management and coordination among member countries for greater efficiency. 

For the Prime Minister’s important mission on Thursday, April 3, the Prime Minister will host a dinner at the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel to welcome the leaders of the six member states or representatives. On Friday, April 4, the Prime Minister will preside over the opening ceremony of the BIMSTEC Summit, which will discuss various issues related to trade and investment, infrastructure connectivity, and strengthening cooperation in food security.

“As the host of this meeting, Thailand will be an important opportunity for Thailand to demonstrate its important role in driving the vision and policies of cooperation among member states to promote economic and social growth in the Bay of Bengal region. Therefore, I would like to invite all sectors to join in welcoming and hosting the 6th BIMSTEC Summit,” said Mr. Chirayu.

The BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) was established on June 6, 1997, initiated by Thailand, together with member countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It is a framework connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia, with the goal of enhancing economic and technical cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region and emphasizing connectivity in many dimensions, such as trade, investment, security, agriculture, connectivity, and sustainability, said Mr. Chirayu.
