On August 27th, 2025, Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa met with key state parties and stakeholders of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, also known as the Ottawa Convention, at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva.
The Thai Foreign Affairs Minister underscored that Thailand is a peace-loving country committed to its obligations under the Convention, particularly in demining and supporting mine victims. He briefed the meeting on recent acts of aggression by Cambodia, detailing the discovery of newly laid landmines on Thai territory, which have disabled numerous Thai soldiers, as well as cross-border attacks that have killed and injured many civilians.
Minister Maris affirmed that in response to these violations, Thailand is pursuing the matter under the framework of the Ottawa Convention and has called on the international community to help bring Cambodia back into full compliance. He added that Thailand will continue to seek solutions through existing bilateral mechanisms concurrently.
The Foreign Minister also announced that Thailand will join the United Nations Secretary-General’s Global Advocacy Campaign on Humanitarian Disarmament and Mine Action. He stated this decision reflects Thailand’s long-standing commitment to the Ottawa Convention and the broader principles of humanitarian disarmament and international humanitarian law.
