Mekong-Lancang Meeting to Discuss Cross-Border Crime

BANGKOK (NNT) – The government has announced plans to use the 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) meeting in Chiang Mai this week to address the issue of call center scam gangs with neighboring countries. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa with discussing strategies to combat cross-border crime, including narcotics, human trafficking, and fraud, with representatives from Laos, China, and India, among others.
The MLC, comprising six countries—Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and China—focuses on regional cooperation to tackle issues like transnational crime and promote sustainable development. Thailand initiated the framework in 2012 to enhance cooperation in the Mekong region and support ASEAN collaboration.
During the meeting, which is set for Thursday and Friday, Prime Minister Srettha is slated to deliver a keynote speech titled “Towards Safer and Cleaner Mekong Lancang.” Following the foreign ministers’ session, a joint press conference will be held by Minister Maris and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, outlining the outcomes and future directives of their discussions.
