BANGKOK (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) has said it is closely monitoring the concluding phase of today’s (June 26) Senate election, alerting candidates that any infractions will lead to strict penalties. From an original lineup of 45,000 applicants, 2,995 candidates have successfully advanced through a stringent selection process and are now contending for 200 Senate seats at Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi province. The winners will be officially announced on July 2.
EC officials have recently conducted checks at various hotels where candidates stayed to uphold election laws and deter prohibited practices such as vote buying.
In instances where candidates are found to be violating election regulations, the EC has affirmed that it is prepared to launch comprehensive investigations and possibly refer cases to the Supreme Court for further action. The consequences of such violations may range from disqualification and suspension of election rights to a permanent ban from electoral participation.
The Senate election is structured in a three-tier process beginning at the district level, where candidates compete within their specific professional groups. Following multiple rounds of intra- and inter-group selections at the district and provincial stages, today’s national stage will finalize the election of Senate representatives for each group.
