Thai Prime Minister and French President Explore Strengthening Relations and Regional Security

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held a telephone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on June 27 to advance bilateral ties, address regional security, and explore future official visits. Both leaders expressed interest in upgrading Thailand–France relations to a strategic partnership. They discussed President Macron’s potential visit to Thailand during the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie summit in Cambodia next year, as well as the Prime Minister’s attendance at the Paris Peace Forum.
Amid global uncertainty, both sides agreed on the need for deeper cooperation, especially in trade, investment, and security. Thailand reaffirmed its balanced foreign policy and appreciation for France’s support in its OECD accession and EU free trade talks. France, meanwhile, expressed interest in broader collaboration, including space technology and regional security.
Paertongtran took the opportunity to outline Thailand’s measures to counter transnational crime, including cyber fraud and call center scams, and affirmed readiness to work closely with international partners. France welcomed these efforts and indicated interest in further coordination.
On the Thai–Cambodian border situation, the Prime Minister reiterated Thailand’s support for a peaceful resolution through bilateral dialogue and ASEAN unity. She highlighted the recent Joint Boundary Commission meeting in Phnom Penh and encouraged France’s role in facilitating future progress.
The leaders also discussed the crises in Myanmar and the Middle East. The Prime Minister made it clear that Thailand supports ceasefires and inclusive political processes, backing ASEAN’s efforts under Malaysia’s current chairmanship. She stressed the importance of a peaceful solution driven by the people of Myanmar.
