Thailand Strengthens Economic Relations During BRICS Discussions with China and Russia

Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa has participated in bilateral talks with his Chinese and Russian counterparts during the BRICS Summit in Brazil, reaffirming Thailand’s commitment to expanding economic ties and upholding global trade principles. The talks touched on trade, cross-border crime, infrastructure development, and regional cooperation.

During discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, both sides explored closer collaboration in combating transnational crime, advancing investment and transport projects, and working within regional frameworks such as the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation. The session highlighted long-standing cooperation and a shared interest in regional stability and connectivity.

In his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Maris pushed for progress on a potential Free Trade Agreement between Thailand and the Eurasian Economic Union. He also encouraged closer tourism ties and expressed appreciation for Russia’s support in hosting recent performances by the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Both bilateral discussions addressed growing global trade uncertainty. Maris reiterated Thailand’s support for the multilateral trading system, stressing the importance of the World Trade Organization in maintaining fair and open trade. He called for continued international dialogue to develop practical responses to shifting economic conditions.

Thailand’s outreach at the BRICS Summit represents its clear strategy of deepening economic engagement with major global players, supporting regional partnerships, and maintaining a strong voice in shaping the rules of global trade.
