BANGKOK (NBT WORLD) – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, now also serving as Minister of Culture, began her new role this week by meeting with ministry executives to outline her strategic direction for Thailand’s cultural future. She positioned culture as a powerful national asset and reaffirmed her intent to elevate Thai identity on the global stage through creativity, heritage, and innovation.
One of her first actions was to address and clarify misinformation spreading online regarding the return of ancient Thai artifacts to Cambodia. Paetongtarn firmly dismissed the claims, explaining that the decision to return 20 items had been approved in 2024 under a previous administration, based on expert assessments. The items have not yet been returned due to budgetary delays. Under her leadership, the Ministry is reviewing the matter in the context of current Thai–Cambodian relations, prioritizing transparency and national interest.
Discussing policy, the Culture Minister proposed a major upgrade to Thailand’s film rebate program. The existing 30 percent incentive, currently offered to international productions, would be extended to Thai filmmakers. The move aims to boost local storytelling, expand job opportunities, and strengthen Thailand’s creative economy.
Paetongtarn concluded the meeting by identifying four cultural sectors with high potential for fast-track growth, namely film, food, Muay Thai, and wellness. These industries are expected to generate tourism, stimulate economic activity, and elevate Thailand’s cultural influence worldwide under her leadership.
