Thailand is expanding its presence in Bhutan, a thriving market supported by strong diplomatic relations. In 2024, Thailand’s exports to Bhutan exceeded 12.94 million US dollars. Leading export categories included vehicles and auto parts, food products, electrical appliances, and cosmetics. Trade between the two countries is expected to grow further with the signing of a Free Trade Agreement anticipated in April 2025.
Bhutan offers Thai businesses a strategic gateway to the Himalayan region, supported by cultural similarities and shared values. With its emphasis on sustainable development and a growing demand for quality services, the country presents opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and other service-related sectors.
Thai companies have already begun establishing a presence in Bhutan. Haven Resort in Paro, currently the only Thai-owned hotel in the country, delivers hospitality with a Thai character. Meanwhile, Pico Alive Co., Ltd. provides environmental solutions that align with Bhutan’s conservation goals, boosting cooperation beyond commercial exchange.
With well-defined development priorities, Bhutan presents a promising opportunity for long-term, sustainable investment. The expected trade agreement is likely to encourage deeper commercial engagement, opening more doors for Thai exporters and investors, while strengthening bilateral ties across both traditional and emerging industries.
